Lock Up Your Passwords
Many of us are guilty of it – allowing our passwords to be easily exploited by cyber criminals.
We either use weak passwords, or reuse passwords on multiple accounts much to the delight of cyber thieves.
There is a proven and simple way though to prevent falling victim to these hackers and that’s by using the services of a password manager.
A password manager will generate and store a different password—one that’s long and complicated—for each of your online accounts while also protecting all your vital online information.
This includes passwords for PINs, credit card numbers and their three-digit CVV codes, answers to security and personal questions and with encryption so strong that it deters the most professional and hardened hackers.
And to benefit from all this security you only need to remember a single password, the one you use to unlock your password vault. Your login data will be locked down and, at the same time, remain right at your fingertips.
You have to pay for some password management services, but not all of them. Four of the most popular password managers worldwide are 1Password, Dashlane, KeePass or LastPass.
To set up an account, you’ll have to use your email address and you will need to think of a master password – one which is long and random to access your vault. A good idea is to use a passphrase, a long sentence which you can easily remember.
Next, you’ll have to let the password manager know about your various accounts. You’ll be able to either import passwords you’ve stored in your browsers, or have the manager store your username and password the next time you log in to a site. Otherwise you can enter the information manually.
It may seem daunting to replace all your weak or reused passwords, especially if you’re dealing with dozens of accounts. But you don’t have to do it all at once.
Think Technology Australia recommends its customers immediately deal with their most highly valued accounts first such as email, banking, and cloud storage and then work through the others as soon as time permits.
