Cyber criminals continue to use email as the main way to steal data and deliver advanced cyber threats.
Two different research papers released this week reveal that phishing attacks are still the most prominent type of cyber-attack against business.
Also, according to the research, there’s been a steady increase in the number of phishing emails impersonating email services.
The leading email service – contained in Microsoft Office 365 – appears to get the most attention along with Google’s cloud-based services.
A research analysis of over 55 million emails has shown that one in every 99 emails is a phishing attack.
Impersonating Brand Names
Phishing attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated and difficult for humans to detect.
Many of the phishing campaigns frequently take the form of emails from what appears to be Microsoft, Google or Amazon.
Out of every 25 branded emails, it is likely that at least one is a phishing email. The emails impersonate trusted brands to get you to click malicious links or surrender personal information on a spoofed landing page.
Alternatively, the emails contain requests to log in, claiming users need to reset their passwords or that there’s a problem with their accounts that needs attention. A URL is included, enticing readers to click to remedy the issue.
The research indicates that at least half of these attacks contain some form of malware.
Once logged in, illegal activities can go on unnoticed as the attackers have what appears to be authorised credentials.
Removing bogus emails before they become a risk to your business network is the best option.
