Microsoft Copilot Cowork is now live for all Microsoft 365 Copilot customers

Microsoft pushed Copilot Cowork to general availability on 16 June 2026, opening it to all Microsoft 365 Copilot customers worldwide. If you have been sitting on your Copilot licences and wondering when AI would actually do real work for you rather than just suggest things, this is the update worth paying attention to.

Cowork is not another chat interface. It is an agentic system that takes a task from your description all the way through to a finished output, working across your Microsoft 365 apps, files, and data in the background. Think of it as the difference between asking a colleague “can you draft something?” and actually delegating the job and coming back to a finished result.

What Copilot Cowork actually does

The core idea is delegation. You describe the outcome you want, and Cowork plans the steps, picks the right tools, and works through them. It pulls from your emails, meetings, calendar, files, and connected business data to ground the work in your actual context, not a generic response.

Practical examples include things like summarising a meeting and sending the recap to your team, pulling together a slide deck from Q3 data, batch-editing spreadsheets, or comparing files across two product versions. These are tasks that used to eat an hour of your day and now get delegated with a prompt.

A few things make this different from standard Copilot chat:

• Cowork works in the background. You do not need to stay in the chat window while it runs.
• It breaks complex requests into steps and works through them sequentially.
• Before taking consequential actions (like sending an email or scheduling a meeting), it pauses and asks for your approval.
• You can interrupt, redirect, or add context mid-task without starting over.
• Finished outputs come back as documents, reports, or sent messages, ready for review.

The Microsoft 365 Copilot app now includes a dedicated Cowork tab, giving users a central place to manage and review delegated work. You can also access it from mobile via the Microsoft 365 Copilot iOS and Android apps, which means you can hand off a task on the train and come back to a finished result at your desk.

What’s new at general availability

Cowork has been in Microsoft’s Frontier early-access program since late March 2026. The general availability release adds several features that were not in the preview.

Model choice. Cowork now runs on Anthropic models including Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 4.6. Microsoft developed Cowork in close collaboration with Anthropic. Frontier customers also have access to GPT 5.5, and a new Cowork 1 model is coming in the weeks ahead. A model picker lets users (and admins) manage cost-per-task by choosing a lighter model where a heavy one is not needed.

Plugins and integrations. Nine new partner plugins are available at launch, with eight more coming shortly. The Dynamics 365 suite (Sales, Customer Service, ERP) and Microsoft Fabric are generally available as native integrations. Third-party plugins from tools like monday.com are also available, with more on the way. Plugins extend Cowork into the business systems your team already uses, rather than requiring separate workflows.

Skills. Cowork uses reusable skill sets for common workflows, things like meeting prep, report drafting, or research tasks. Built-in skills cover Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, email, scheduling, and calendar management. These skills can be customised, so Cowork follows your team’s process, not a generic template.

Branded templates and image creation. At general availability, Cowork supports branded document templates and image generation, useful for teams that produce client-facing materials regularly.

How security and compliance work

This matters a lot for businesses in regulated industries, and it was clearly a design priority for Microsoft. Cowork does not bypass your existing Microsoft 365 controls. Prompts, responses, and generated outputs all flow through your existing Microsoft 365 governance settings.

At general availability, the covered protections include the audit log, Data Security Posture Management (DSPM), eDiscovery, Insider Risk Management, Data Lifecycle Management, and Communication Compliance policies. Sensitivity labels carry through end-to-end. Data Loss Prevention (DLP) integration is coming soon.

For businesses in professional services, healthcare, or finance where information handling is tightly governed, this level of integration with existing security controls is what makes Cowork usable in production rather than just in sandboxed demos.

Pricing and admin controls

This is where you need to pay attention before enabling Cowork for your team. The billing model is different from your standard per-user Microsoft 365 Copilot licence.

Cowork runs on usage-based billing via Copilot Credits, on top of your existing Microsoft 365 Copilot licence. You need the M365 Copilot licence to access Cowork, and then usage is metered in credits as Cowork runs tasks. Microsoft offers a pay-as-you-go option at around $0.01 per credit, or a prepaid volume option for predictability.

Importantly, Cowork is off by default. Admins must explicitly enable it in the Microsoft 365 admin centre and configure billing before users can access it. Admins can set spending limits at the tenant, group, and user level, with hard caps and custom usage alerts. Users who hit their individual limit can request more from their admin rather than tasks simply failing mid-run.

A new Cost Management Dashboard in the Microsoft 365 admin centre shows usage broken down by user, group, and feature. Per-task pricing visibility for end users is coming shortly after general availability.

If your organisation was in the Frontier preview program between 30 March and 16 June 2026, your tenants will not be billed until 1 July 2026. Admin action is needed before that date to keep active Frontier users connected.

In our experience, the gap between “we have Copilot licences” and “Copilot is actually saving us time” comes down to one thing: most users are still treating it as a chat tool rather than a task tool. Cowork closes that gap in a meaningful way.

For professional services firms (accountants, lawyers, consultants, financial advisers) who already run on Microsoft 365, the appeal is straightforward. Recurring tasks like meeting recaps, briefing notes, draft reports, and research summaries are exactly the kind of work Cowork is built for. These are high-frequency, time-consuming tasks where a finished output, rather than a starting draft, is genuinely valuable.

The billing model does require some planning. Usage-based costs on top of per-seat licences can surprise teams if spending limits are not set from the start. We would recommend treating the Cost Management Dashboard as a first step before any team-wide rollout, not an afterthought. Set limits at the user or group level, run a pilot with a defined group, and review usage before broadening access.

Do we need a new licence to use Copilot Cowork?

You need an existing Microsoft 365 Copilot licence per user. Cowork is not a separate product but is accessed through that licence. Usage is then billed separately on a consumption basis using Copilot Credits. If your team already holds Microsoft 365 Copilot licences, you do not need to buy anything new to get started, but you do need to enable billing in the admin centre.

Is Cowork turned on automatically for our team?
