How to setup your DISP email
If you’re applying for DISP (Defence Industry Security Program) membership, one of the first requirements is having a valid DISP@ email address. This email is used for secure communication between your organisation and the Department of Defence. It is just one of several DISP requirements. Here’s a straightforward guide to help you set it up the right way.
Create the Email Address
Start by setting up a dedicated email in this format: DISP@YourEntityName.
Make sure you follow these naming rules:
- Use exactly “DISP” before the @ symbol.
- Use your entity’s domain name (e.g., fredconsulting.com).
- You can use any domain extension (.com, .net.au, .org, .biz etc).
Hosting rules are strict:
- The email must not be on a shared, web-based, or cPanel hosting platform.
- It must be hosted onshore in Australia. If offshoring is necessary, it requires encryption and explicit DISP Cyber Team approval.
Examples:
Speak with your internal IT support or domain provider to get the email address set up properly.
Test the Email Address
Before you use this address in your DISP application, it needs to be tested.
Sending Test: Send an email from the DISP@ email to an external address (like a personal email) to confirm it sends properly.
Receiving Test: Send an email to the DISP@ address from an external address to confirm it receives correctly.
If either test fails, follow your organisation’s internal IT support processes. DISP can’t help with email issues.
Monitor the Inbox
Once the DISP@ email address is live, make sure someone is checking it regularly. Important communication about your DISP membership, including approvals and requests for further information, will come through this address.
Even after your membership is approved, ongoing correspondence may continue via this address, so it should remain active and monitored.
